The area dedicated to Cardio training includes: 16 treadmills, 15 stationary bikes, 5 total body Synchro machines, 15 rowers and 5 kayak rowers. Plus 30 stations for the patented Wellness Key system with more than 1,000 interactive TGS Keys that track athletes training and performance.

The area dedicated to Strength training ffers 100 strength machines, 40 benches, 200 dumbbells, 100 weight disks. To sum up: 90 pieces of Selection Line Strength equipment, 65 benches, 44 Excite Line pieces for Cardiovascular Training.

Despite long opening hours, from 6 am to 10 pm, athletes and trainers alike are lining up to use the machines. Peak hours are from 8 am to 12 noon and from 4pm to 9 pm. Athletes from 202 countries meet to run, row and float together with Synchro!

Preferred equipment include the 16 Run Excite, the 15 Bikes and the 15 Synchro. In the least crowded hours, approximately 200 people train side by side, while in the top times 600 to 1,500 athletes, as on the 16th of August, workout together. That equals out to less than 2 square metres each! All disciplines, volleyball and football teams alike, train together and take advantage of the relaxing area to share their strategies. The Cardio machines are used for training in all kind of sports while the Strength training is mainly used to heavy training. An example is a Nigerian first-time Olympic competitor Onyemachi Chmukwuemake, training with the Cross over Cable machine lifting the likes of 100 kilos to the beat of the latest rap and hip-hip hits.

Figures speak by themselves.

A forecast of the 16 pieces of SELECTION Strength Equipment Usage till the end of the Olympic Games:

The nations training are colourful and multiethnic, with South American countries like Brazil alongside Caribbean islands like Cuba, the many African countries, as well as Jamaica and Nigeria. Among European nations Italy, France, Russia and Poland weigh in. And Asian countries are dedicated users with Chinese athletes among the first to set foot in the Gym. Last but not least, Iranian nationals, Middle Easterns from all over and Indian sports experts add flair and personalization to standard training gear by mixing modern materials with their own traditional dress. Vivacious Roqaya el Ghasra, 100 meter runner from Bahrain, especially enjoys the an elliptic workout on the Synchro. Low turnout by U.S. athletes is due to their distant living quarters. Hosted on a massive ship in the Pireo Harbour, athletes are under constant helicopter and military surveillance.

The training programme varies based on the different sport specialities. Initial warm up starts with a stint on Run Excite and the Bike Excite, usually 30 minutes to an hour. After that, each athlete uses equipment most adapted to their speciality. Canoeing, sailing and swimmers get the most out of the Synchro which combines strength and flexibility. The strength equipment such as Chest Press, Leg Press, Abdominal Crunch and free weights are used mainly by volleyball basketball and football players, where strength training that uses lighter weight load is needed for their arms and legs.

Athletes of the more aggressive disciplines, like wrestling and weight lifting, need machines to lift heavy weights such as the Lap Pulldown machine which has a capacity of over 160 kg, and the Pulley Machine which loads maximum 280 kg.

Short and long distance runners combine the indoor and outdoor training to beat the Athens heat that can tickle 45° c during the day. Sprinters and hurdlers run rounds on the outside track and training field, but during the hottest hours duck inside for training.

For all disciplines, the training ends with a cool down and stretching phase in the specially designated area. Rehydrating energy drinks are gulped down regain lost liquids and minerals.
Training sessions average from an hour to two. But all sense of time slips away while mingling with great athletes from so many countries, chatting about the competitions that are being continually broadcast by the 5 mega screen televisions positioned throughout the Gym.

Trainers, physiotherapists, doctors and managers take advantage of the facilities and spend the time to get familiarized with the computerized Wellness System as training tool to manage and monitor training sessions in progress. Almost all athletes come to the Gym with pre-defined training programs and their personal trainers who are interested in analysing performance, adjust loads and adapt training sessions - all of which can be done effortlessly with the Wellness Key.

Personalities who have trained and are still working out in the gym are some of the best in athletic history. Argentine football players Roberto Ayala and Kili Gonzales, Captain of the Brazilian waterpolo team Lucila Vianna da Silva, Brazilian tennis great Gustavo Kuerte, Argentine basketball Sconochini, Italian volleyball and football team members, Cuba volleyball team, the USA runner Coby Miller among the sprinters of 200m final at Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, sailing champion Paul Kayard and Antonio Castro, Fidel Castro's son, Chief of the medical staff of the Cuban baseball team.

Last but not least, we can't forget the visit of the highest ranking government member of the Italian state. President of Italian Republic: Carlo Azeglio Ciampi!
